Regular bird walks are scheduled every Thursday and Sunday from 8:30 to 10:30a.m. during the months of April, May, September, and October, meeting at the Bird House in Lincoln Park Zoo. The walks are co-sponsored with the Lincoln Park Zoo.
November 12, 2011 --Fermi Lab. Meet at 8:30 at the main entrance on Pine Street just off of Farnsworth Ave. Take I-88 west from the city to Farnsworth Ave. Go north on Farnsworth to the main entrance to Fermi, taking a right off of Farnsworth onto Pine Street. At the gate state that you are there to bird in the public areas, then proceed to meet at the Education Center parking lot on the right side of Pine Street. Areas open to the public for birding include the Fermilab Village and Nature Area, Eola Road Grasslands, and the Bison Area. Contact the leader for transportation. January 21, 2012 -- Birding at the Field Museum. 9:30 a.m. Enjoy warm weather birding in the middle of a Chicago winter by birding at the Field Museum. Wayne Svoboda, a docent at the Field, will show us the highlights of the bird collection and also perhaps get us into some of the special shows going on at the Field this winter. January 28-29- 2012 -- Eagle Watch Weekend at Starved Rock State Park. 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. Free admission. More information at the IAS website. Highlights of the trip are always the ever growing population of eagles and the live raptor programs. Members of Starved Rock Audubon also promise to have scopes on hand for viewing along the Illinois River and locks.
February 18, 2012 -- 11th Annual Gull Frolic at North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor. Come join a team of gull experts to see some of the less common winter gulls in the Chicago area. Starts at 8:00 a.m. There is a $10 fee which includes breakfast and lunch. Advance registration is required as they now have to limit attendance due to fire code restrictions -- last year it sold out by mid-January. Make checks payable to IOS Gull Frolic, mail to IOS, PO Box 931, Lake Forest, IL 60045. Bring your scopes and dress with plenty of layers -- the lakefront can be pretty chilly in February. Take I-94 North; exit Route 173; East to Sheridan Road (Route 137); Left to 7th Street; Right and follow signs to North Point Marina. Illinois Audubon is one of the sponsors of the Gull Frolic and Fort Dearborn and Lake/Cook Audubon will help staff the Illinois Audubon table at the event.
March 24 -- Waterfowl of Palos. Celebrate the start of spring with an early trip to look for spring waterfowl. Meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Little Red School House Nature Center, 9800 Willow Springs Road, Willow Springs, IL. We will also travel to other sites in the Palos area looking for spring waterfowl, including McGinnis Slough. Leader: Mark Luscombe, 847-267-2440.
